Artists Statement

My work is about beauty, life itself, and the things around us. It is about how people make life decisions...essentially how and why people choose to do what they do and believe what they believe.

I try to see beauty wherever I go, and to find beauty in everything.    I find that while beauty is everywhere, I tend to concentrate my focus on the human form and plants, specifically flowers and flowering vines.

To say that I try to find beauty in everything does not mean that I am not critical or angry. These days I find myself very deeply disturbed by the current political trends and seemingly unbelievable world events.  Perhaps that is why I am able to become so completely entranced in the color of a flower of the line of a figure and am able to take interest in the patterns in something as mundane as my coffee grinds?

I’m not sure we live in any more turbulent a time than any other generation but I feel because of the internet and other media we are more aware of  it and of each other.   We are literally bombarded on a daily basis about how each other lives their lives,  wether we watch the daily news,  or some ‘reality’ show or just surf the mypaces or youtubes of the internet.  I myself don’t watch TV but that doesn’t escape me from the blanket of marketing material that offers to guide me in making my life decisions.  Nike says “just do it”.  Other adds say, “be a tiger”.    Its a wonder that anyone can find their inner voice through all that noise.

Finding one’s inner voice has been a major subject of my artwork for a few years now and I have referred to this in my work first as exploring the concept of uncertainty, then as the life decisions series, then as finding the inner voice.
